Embeddings in AI: Definition, Types & Applications 2026
Ever typed a query into Google and gotten results that match your intent, not just your exact words? That's embeddings at work. An AI embeddings definition boils down to this: embeddings convert real-world data — text, images, audio — into arrays of numbers (vectors) so machines can measure similarity, categorize content, and make predictions. After reading this guide, you'll understand what embeddings are, how they're created, where they're used, and why they're the backbone of modern AI.
What Are Embeddings?
Embeddings are dense, low-dimensional vector representations of data. Instead of treating a word like "cat" as a meaningless symbol, an embedding model assigns it a list of hundreds or thousands of floating-point numbers. Those numbers encode semantic meaning: "cat" ends up close to "kitten" and "feline" in vector space, and far from "carburetor" or "spreadsheet."
Here's why that matters. Traditional encoding methods like one-hot vectors are sparse and enormous — a 50,000-word vocabulary needs a 50,000-dimensional vector per word, with 49,999 zeros. Embeddings compress that into 300–3,072 dimensions where every value carries useful information.
The diagram below shows how embeddings fit into the broader AI pipeline:
